Art Apprentice Online Classroom...

The Art Apprentice Online firmly believes that the traditional live classroom is by far the most beneficial situation for the art student. Nothing can replace the guidance of a real teacher looking over the student's shoulder and holding their hand, if only for a moment. Having a 'real' teacher available to assist with immediate problems and varying learning curves is by far the best choice for the student of art. While online classes or videos do not offer the enjoyment of social interaction, they do however support and expose student artists to education that they may not have had the chance to observe. Online education presents the art student with another style of learning.

The Traditions Education Modules are not offered from this website. If you are interested in attending weekly classes of the Traditions Education Program, please contact a Traditions Teacher in your area. Why Distance Learning...

Distance learning has gained in popularity around the world. This style of learning has proved itself because of its availability and flexibility to work with everyone’s schedule; even in remote areas anyone who uses a computer can have access to a classroom if and when they so wish. Here we invite you directly into our online classroom whenever it works for you. We offer the opportunity to participate in education that will help you grow as an artist and provide direction to further your study!

“When it comes to education I like to view all areas as relative rather than remote.” - Unknown

Technology and Art Apprentice Online...

"This telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." ~ Western Union internal memo, 1876

As the saying goes...Hindsight is 20/20. Technology has become part of our everyday lives and we all know that it is here to stay. These are exciting times we live in, information is only moments away, especially for those who live in rural and remote areas.

Online education provides a convenient and flexible alternative for learning.  This is often a preferable choice for education when work and family schedules, travel, health, and many other factors must be considered. The Art Apprentice Online is a click away.

Shops, Teachers, DVD's etc.

There really is not a substitute for the one on one interaction and help of a teacher - not to mention such things as the question and answer ability and the two sided discussion that ensues during a class. DVD's and Online classes are not intended to be a substitute for the painting teacher.  No matter how great any DVD is - you can't ask the teacher if you've got it right or if yours is too light or a dozen other such questions students usually have.

If you are fortunate enough to live near a shop or near teachers for that matter, or if you are able to travel to take from a teacher you are very fortunate.

We do need to support those shops in our areas by purchasing supplies from them and by taking classes. They cannot stay in business without community support.  Being in a classroom situation on a regular basis is a fun thing besides.  A lady once told me it was her therapy and that it was a lot cheaper than a psychiatrist!  If you have a hard time finding the time to paint sign up for weekly classes - then you will paint for sure.  Many people just sign up for 6 to 8 weeks at a time of "open class" painting where they can get help with whatever they want to work on.  Those have always been some of the most enjoyable classes for me to teach..  The support that students can give each other is great.

There are also many pluses to owning some DVD's - you can watch them over and over and over.  You can hit that rewind button as often as you need.  You can "pause" and give yourself all the time you need to get caught up without worrying one bit about getting behind and missing something.  You are not rushed to get your piece painted in a preset amount of class time.  And sometimes you have time to paint during hours shops just are not open.  If you are in poor health or have someone at home you cannot leave for extended periods of time DVD's can be a life saver to a painter.  If you live in a remote or otherwise small town that does not have a shop or other painting resources they are the next best thing to being there.  They are a very affordable alternative if you are on a limited income and do not have the luxury of traveling to take seminars. And even if you do take classes in a shop, DVD's and other Online Classes can be considered an "enhancement" or "enrichment" to complement what we are currently doing.

Ideally it is best to have a mix of painting experiences . . .we all learn differently and at different rates.
We learn when we follow written instruction and have to interpret those instructions - (yes we sometimes  get very frustrated by them as well).  We learn when we hear, when we see, when we do, and when we explain to others what we do.  If we only see and hear our comprehension and our retention is not nearly as good as when we also "do" and then repeat it by teaching it to someone else or explain it to someone else.  If you only 'watch'  and "listen" to the painting DVD's you do not get the same things you would get if you would sit down and actually "do" what is being explained on the DVD because we also learn by doing - - and that doing part of it helps to cement it for us.
It's a blessing that we have so much information available to us right at our fingertips. We need to consider that information to be an enhancement to our art education and not think one experience can substitute another . . .we will do our best when we take advantage of all that is available to us!

An Artist Must Remember...

“Intuitively we know many things, by practice we gain ability, and by experimenting we learn but there is nothing quite like the feeling of ‘verification’ and ‘confirmation’ when additional  sources of education confirm and/or explain those things to us.  The value of understanding what we see and do cannot be underestimated.

When we are taught, or otherwise learn technical skills, correct principles and sound theories, and apply them to our art work it will be improved or enhanced.  It is very safe to say that when properly applied the one key ingredient that will always make a difference is knowledge.”
