Real knowledge, like everything else of value,
is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought
for, and, more that all must be prayed for. Thomas Arnold 1795 - 1842

Welcome to Art Studies. Here you will find several short essays written about the Formal Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. For your easy reference we have divided this section into two separate areas. One deals with Color Theory and the other Artistic Concepts. |

“America was discovered accidentally by a great seaman who was looking for something else; when discovered it was not wanted; and most of the exploration for the next fifty years was done in the hope of getting through or around it. America was named after a man who discovered no part of the New World. History is like that, very chancy.” ~ Samuel Eliot Morison 1887 – 1976. |

The quote above says quite a lot, especially to the artist…the phrase ’was discovered accidentally’ speaks to the student. How many student artists learn about the principles of art by accident? They either happen across them accidentally or miss their meaning. Other artists try getting around them, avoidance at any cost! |

The section on Color Theory is meant to point the student in a particular direction by introducing the simple language of color and suggesting why we need to study color theory. Short essays are used to explain in simple language how to approach learning this huge topic with a logical approach. The second section, Artistic Concepts covers additional ideas. The formal elements of art and the principles of design and composition are the focus. These are concepts that all artists use on their artistic journey. |

The intent of the Art Apprentice Online is to share a common view point while providing a compass. Our wish is only to wet the appetite as we delve into future learning and deeper study. Our common belief is that each of us will become the independent artist when we grasp and understand the fundamental tools used for painting. |

...we must always remember that Mark Twain, the famous author once said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” We learn when we make new discoveries… |
