Online Art Discussions - starting 2008
What are 'online' discussions?
On-line discussions will provide our viewers with an opportunity to participate in in-depth topics related to art. Students and teachers have been interacting in the classroom for several years. However, since the birth of the internet, we have all seen several styles of networking forums and bulletin boards develop. The Traditions list on Yahoo is an example of such a 'networking' forum. In that particular case, the list membership or participants post a question or comment to the list and wait for a response. These on-line discussions will be slightly different and geared strictly to a more academic style of art topics. While the discussion will be open to anyone, the reader will have a unique perspective on the discussion.
How does this discussion work?
Artists can discuss or debate a particular subject over a longer period of time. The style of the discussion will allow the viewers to follow along with the particular topic that is of interest to them.
What are the benefits to this style of discussion?
Online discussions can be very helpful to the art student and art teacher as they often help promote the 'critical thinking' skills required for independent artistic development. These types of discussions can be very appealing and stimulating, not only for the participant but for the viewer. They take place over a period of time giving the participants more time to think about their answers before responding to them. Participants will be able to spend time researching their answers and are better prepared to bring quality answers to the discussion or debate.
What are the benefits to the participant?
The participant learns through research and writing. They are able to broaden their knowledge about certain subjects, they learn to appreciate subjects from all sides and this can enrich the experience of art study.
What are some of the upcoming topics?
The topics and questions for discussions will be focused on several important areas of the artistic arena. The Art Apprentice Online plans to explore and delve deeper into both decorative and classical fine art, bridging the two as they have much in common. We believe this will provide interesting subjects for us to explore, providing both participant and viewer with a valuable learning experience.
