Watercolors - Using Masking Fluid

Using Masking Fluid to preserve the white space on the paper or to protect another color. Watch a short snippet demonstrating how this simple technique may be used in watercolor painting with instructor Neadeen Masters, CDA.

Masking fluid should be used with caution. It can reveal hard white edges when removed from the paper's surface. Remove masking fluid within 24 hours of application, any longer and the risk of damaging the paper increases.

  • Never apply masking fluid to wet or damp paper.
  • Allow the masking fluid to dry completely for about 10 - 20 minutes.
  • Use the rubber cement remover to remove the dried masking fluid.
  • Never leave the bottle of masking fluid open to the air as it will dry out quickly.
